I’m Bob, and this website is about my quest to travel the country by rail on a razor thin budget. Why such a tight budget? It’s fun! I enjoy luxuriant vacations too, but sleeping in a coach seat or in hostels makes it much easier for me to strike up conversations with fellow travelers. I find that money can sometimes insulate me from what I’m out there looking for. It also uses up more resources and tends to increase my carbon footprint.

If you are considering a trip on Amtrak, it’s important to know what to expect. Train travel in the U.S. is slow and not always on time. This can be frustrating for people who are on a tight schedule and need to get where they are going. If you want a vacation that is all about the destination, get yourself to the nearest airport. If you are open to a vacation that is about the journey and are willing to go with the flow, Amtrak might be what you are looking for.

I’ve really enjoyed the trips, but I think I’ve had just as much fun preparing for them. The blog entries are about my adventures, but also about the bespoke travel gear I’ve been making to help me comfortably sleep in a coach seat and have fresh, healthful meals on the marathon 2-day rail journeys.
